Black and Red February 10, 2010

There is a saying, if you spit in the air, it will hit you in the face. I think the man behind the supposed 16 September mass migration of frogs learned it the hard way– defeated in his own game of deceit.

But a wrong does not justify another wrong in response. Two wrong does not make a right. Somebody else needs to learn it the hard way also. If you spit in the air, it will hit you in the face, badly.

Hoist the black flag. Mourn the death of democracy if you want to. But fly the red flag when you’re done mourning.

I think this time, it’s for real, that you’re gone for good. I never thought it’ll be this soon. You have come back from the brink of death more than once, but this recent blow proves too fatal for you, too strong for you.

You have been good to me. And I have not appreciated you. In fact, I have overused you. You were with me every time when I needed you the most, especially during the final few moments of memorials submission for all my previous moot competitions. Well, at least I still have your brain with me to remember you by.

chewy’s laptop

Time of death, about an hour ago.

Initial prognosis on the cause of death: multiple blows to the motherboard over the past few months by the Vista Blue Screen of Death.

Last dying wish: That Windows Vista be wiped out from the face of earth to avoid any unnecessary death to another laptop.

Rest in peace, buddy.

…I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have a happy life too. I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness does not come from being rich, nor merely being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so you can enjoy life when you are a man. Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it. Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one. But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. ‘Be Prepared’ in this way, to live happy and to die happy — stick to your Scout Promise always…

This is ef-fing frustrating . I have been staring at the same freakin’ page for ten minutes, moving up and down, up and down. Can’t you write in simpler sentences? What on earth were you thinking when you were writing?

“Oh, I might as well write a book that students can’t possibly understand so I’ll look smart.”

Yeah, maybe that’s what you are thinking. HLA Hart is making me feel dumb. I hate feeling dumb. Heck, the whole of Jurisprudence is making me fell dumb.

*echoes Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb

At many points of our lives, there will be people who pre-judge our capabilities. Like everyone else, we get affected by these pre-judgments, even if it is utter senseless and unjustified according to the standard of an ordinary man.

But really, the best way to counter these pre-judgments is to shut yourself out of it, and to do what you have been tasked to do the best you could, and everything else will turn out fine. Do the things you do with good intentions, and all will be well for you. Pray for the worst to happen to people, and the worst shall befall on you. This is karma.

I found the great impetuous to write about this, thanks to Daniel, my successor in Rotaract. Daniel, when he was preparing to take over from me knew very well that he has to live up to great expectations,  and he was very positive about it. But no amount of positiveness could prepare him for the unjustified pre-judgments that he got from some quarters.

Now, a little bit over a year after the doubters voiced their doubts, he has shown how they were so wrong to judge him so. He has vindicated himself, and his Board of Directors. You have done justice to those who believed in you. The naysayers will continue to doubt you, and blind themselves of the results that you have produced, but all they could do now is to doubt in silence.

It’s poetic justice.

Why wait for the world to change? January 17, 2010

John Mayer, Waiting on the World to Change

Me and all my friends
We’re all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing and
There’s no way we ever could

Now we see everything that’s going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don’t have the means
To rise above and beat it

So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

It’s hard to beat the system
When we’re standing at a distance
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change

Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They would have never missed a Christmas
No more ribbons on their door
And when you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want

That’s why we’re waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

It’s not that we don’t care,
We just know that the fight ain’t fair
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

And we’re still waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting waiting on the world to change
One day our generation
Is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

Why wait for the world to change?

Cryptic Poet January 2, 2010

I noticed how I no longer write poems. At some point last year, I lost my touch and interest in writing cryptic, cheesy and corny poems.

Here’s a short two-stanza poem to see if I could be as cryptic as I was before.

The Cliff

before a horizon

dark clouds dancing in unison

droplets of rains on murky water

bruises and cuts, agonizing, excruciating

falling into the abyss

she feels a sense of peace

for all there is now is a deafening silence

in eternity

Now, it’s not that good to start the new year with what might seem like a depressing poem. But rest assured, that the real meaning behind this poem is not depressing at all. Try guessing.

A year ago, I wrote this in my post, Death

All men fear death, for death takes everything away from men. I fear death. One my journey to college this morning, there was one elderly couple who were discussing about their sickness. In the cafetaria just now, I spoke to a lecturer of mine, who just one month ago was hospitalised for a life-threatening condition. The elderly couple and the lecturer; they look so frail and fragile. They remind me that as strong one can be, we all cannot escape the cycle of life; birth, ageing, sickness and ultimately, death.

That lecturer of mine, he passed away a month ago. Today, I am reminded again of my mortality, of the fragile life that we are all holding onto by the death of a friend’s brother. This young man, he was my age, six days older than me to be precise. I do not know him, but that friend of mine once spoke fondly of his brother and I could see how much he loved and adored him from the sparkle in his eyes when he spoke. Maybe because he was my age, his passing affected me in some sense though I do not know him personally. It reminds me that none of us is ever far away from death.

Life is short. Make full use of it. Do not indulge in senseless activities. If you hate someone, stop hating them because it isn’t going to make your life happier. If you’re thinking of revenge, stop thinking of it because it isn’t going to make your life any better. Life is too precious to be wasted on hatred, vengeance, jealousy, suspicion and anger. Use every second of your life like it is your last one.

It is not how long you lived, but how you lived that matters.
